Norco ITX-S8 nas case 11 - Upgrading the memory in 2022

 October 7, 2022

I haven't used my nas much lately so I wanted to upgrade the memory since this board only goes up to 32 gigs total if you can believe that. It's been fine for a nas, but now I want to test other software and see if I can make better use of it. So I ordered this ram from amazon but unfortunately it did not work on this motherboard. I thought I update the bios as well since I have never done it. The update went fine and it seems to be working a bit better, unfortunately this memory is still not working so I am returning it. It has all the similar specifications but it's a no go. Until then I'll just go play with the software and see what I can do there.

October 21, 2023 update:

I have updated the OS hard drive with a raid drive setup with the adapter I'm showing you on this videos.

I also ended up getting some more hard drive screws since I was missing a couple from new.

Needles to say, the nas is working great. I wanted to update the nas pages to show that it still working just fine after all this time and as you can see I have made a few more upgrades including a raid for the OS drives.

September 9, 2024 Update:

The nas psu died when I plugged it into a wall outlet. I haven't used it much and when I tried using it again, there was a spark on the outlet. I thought it was the outlet but it turned out to be the psu that decided to die. I decided to try a different outlet thinking it was that and bam, the same thing, but it also took the motherboard because I did check it with another power supply that was even less wattage than the 1u psu I ordered and that worked with the other motherboard I had. Eventually I settle for an apevia 400w that you see in the pictures and it is working fine. I found these on amazon which was good as there were not many when I first looked.  So I'm happy to say that I found one that works and because I'm using the open media vault, I was able to use a different motherboard since it's what I had and I needed to get back to my stuff. It did take a while to get the right part and once I did, I just needed to reset the ip with the omv- firstaid. I am now able to connect with no problem. I ended up using an 8 port sata card since the board only has 4 ports I think it is. The new psu also allowed me to plug the OS hd directly to the board and also boot from it without using a usb port which I thought I would need. I then just needed to make a couple of changes in the bios to make sure it would boot up correctly and all is well again.

Apevia 400w power supply

Testing the old board with the new psu for the third time to make sure it was also not working.

I was now able to get rid of the usb hub I was using to connect the OS drive before. Now I can connect it to one of the sata ports on the motherboard since all 8 sata ports on the new card are being used by the 8 bay drives.

Here's a look a the new modular apevia power supply. As you can see it is much cleaner. I do wish the cables were just a tab longer. They did reach but felt a bit on the short side. Good thing it worked out on this board, but if the power connector for the main board was on the other side, this cable may not reach.

Since I'm not using a gpu, I was able to leave this one cable out.
