AsRock C236WSI Motherboard Bios brick and fix.

December 1, 2017

I decided to make a new page for this motherboard. You can check out the pictures here. I even have a nice closeup of the chip version.

Here's the actual board on their site to make it easier to find.

The reason for starting a whole new page for this board is because I decided to upgrade the bios today and the board I think bricked on me after updating it. I get no post. I read a little bit about other similar boards that also didn't upgrade just like mine. So at the moment, I get nothing on the screen when I turn it on. I guess that saying is correct, there's a first time for everything. This is the first board bios that has ever done this to me and I have upgraded many boards. I also didn't do a write up on this board since I just took the pictures and posted them in the above link.

I used their flash utility under the bios, and downloaded the bios from the website like I always do. The worst part is that this is my storage so I can't get to anything at the moment but I only use it occasionally.

I just contacted their support to see if I can do anything else on my side to get this going. I just noticed that it's just a small chip on this board, so if I can just get that replaced with a working version, then that would make a big difference since shipping something this small should be a piece of cake. But we'll see and I want to note the process in case anyone else runs into the same problem.

Update December 4, 2017
It's monday and I received an email back from asrock. I used their website online help support page and they did get back to me today. Since this happened on friday night I had to wait until this week which is fine. The good news is that they there and will support you. This wasn't the case when I first tried before buying the board, but so far the support looks good now. So I can now recommend the asrock boards. So far this is my very first board from them and it's been working great.

Now, I didn't want to start messing around before I heard about what they had to say and I'm glad I did because I was able to get going again without having to mail anything back to them. Here are the instructions they sent me.

"Additionally, have you tried clearing the CMOS? To do this you will need to remove the 24-pin ATX and the CMOS battery from the board. Then press and hold the power button for 20s.  You may then replace the 24-pin ATX and battery back into the board and then power it on."

I went ahead and did this and after rebooting one or two times, the board came back to life, and I noticed that the firmware had actually updated too.  For whatever reason it didn't want to boot up right after the upgrade. This is the first board that has ever done this, but after following the instructions above, everything is working again, I did have to make a few setting changes again, but that's normal after you update any bios.

The best part is that since the power and battery are on the same corner on the side of the board, this made it very easy to unplug and take the battery out without having to take the board out or even unplug anything else inside.  I put everything back after the procedure and put the cover back on and I'm back up again.

On a side note, since I have never bothered with anything other than updating the firmwares, I thought I order one of those bios usb chip programmers. I figure I check it out in case this bios was really done. The good news is that I won't even need that, but it's always nice to have just in case. I hope I'll never need one, but you never know.
