CNC 2 - Motors

The stepper motors

Today I started looking around for motors and this is a bit tough due to all the different specifications, specially that some have a rating in n.m and others in oz-in. So here's a nice conversion calculator to help with this. I also learned that motors would be the second item(s) you should try to purchase. I say this because once you get the motors, you can physically see what wire gauge they come with, although 22awg is recommended but many use 20awg and even 18awg. I emailed gecko drives to find out if the ebay power supply I ordered might work with the gecko. Marcus was kind enough to tell me but also suggested I should get the motors since you would need to look at their specifications, then go from there. So that makes sense. I'll just put the pages in these order to help others take the correct steps or at least what would be more helpful if you're going the DIY route. Nothing is written in stone and you can do whatever you like, I'm just trying to make it easy to follow so you're not trying to figure things out later. Keep in mind that I'm doing this from scratch and there are many packages out there that you can get instead of going this route. I just like to learn the process and what it takes to make my mini mill all cnc. So this is more of a learning experience for me more than anything.

Now back to the calculator, Lin Engineering has this easy to use calculator if you find all different specifications instead of both on the same motor. I rather see both to make it easy to figure out what you need.

This morning I decided to go with these motors due to their price and the fact that I can use them with the g540. The only difference seems to be the shaft size, but I don't think it's that big deal so we'll see when I get them.

I received my new stepper motors today. Since I can't add the pictures here, I put them in a picasa album.

NOTE: It looks like the motors I got are no longer on their site, and I just got them all connected to the gecko today. No biggie as they still work fine and I still have to mount them to the mini mill and get the software working. So I have been looking at their site and it looks like this is their new model that has similar specifications to the ones I got from them. Well I'm just looking at the specifications that would work with the gecko drive. I just thought I update this in case others are looking for some similar and affordable stepper motors. Looking at the spec sheet they look to be the same motor but with different part number on the site.

Here are the two spec sheets since I thought I didn't have mine and it's always nice to have it. Well I need to see if this blog will let me attach any file like the pdf files for the specs.

This is the current motor spec sheet.

Here's the one for the motors I have.
